 Gavan O' Herlihy, who played Cunningham's eldest son in Happy Days, dies at age 70 

Gavan John O'Herlihy (July 29, 1951 — September 15, 2021) was an Irish-American actor. He was known for playing Chuck Cunningham in the early episodes of Happy Days, as well as for his appearances in films like Never Say Never Again, Death Wish 3, Willow, and Superman III.

O'Herlihys agent Michael Emptage confirmed to Fox News that he died in England on September 15. 

Television and Theater 

Michael Emptage said USA TODAY in a statement that O'Herlihy died in Bath, England, on September 15. There was no cause of death. Emptage recalled O'Herlihy as “a wonderful actor with a long and prestigious career in film, television and theater.”

O'Herlihy died on September 15, 2021 at the age of 70 in Bath, Somerset. He was survived by his wife Juliette and their children Rogan, Lonan, David and Daniel. 

Career

He appeared in Rich Man, Poor Man, and Tales From The Crypt. In 1994, he played John Garrideb in “The Mazarin Stone” of the Granada TV series Sherlock Holmes. The events of history were rewritten and merged into The Adventure of the Three Garridebs. He was cast as the older brother, Chuck Cunningham, on happy days. He was eventually replaced by Randolph Roberts until the episode “Guess Who's Coming to Christmas”. Chuck was not seen again, but was later mentioned in a few other episodes that ended with “Fish and the Fins”. After that, Chuck was completely eliminated from the show with subsequent episodes that featured the Cunningham family with just two children with Richie as an elder. The character led to the derogatory term “Chuck Cunningham syndrome,” which refers to characters who disappear from television shows without explanation and are later known to have never existed. O'Herlihy didn't want to get stuck in favorite television roles and movies. He played a warrior in the production of George Lucas Willow, directed by his Happy Days brother, Ron Howard. He also appeared in the pilot episode of Star Trek: Voyager, “Caretaker,” as Kazon's first teammate, Jabin. She also appeared in the television series. 

Leader

O'Herlihy was cast as the sadistic killer Dan Suggs in the mini-series Lonesome Dove in 1989. In the 1990s, O'Herlihy had moved permanently to the United Kingdom, where he preferred to work in theatre and television, with roles on British television including coded hostile, Sharpe, Jonathan Creek and Midsomer Murders. 

In 2009, O'Herlihy returned as Sheriff Vaines in the successor to Neil Marshall's cult horror film The Deses Cent 2 on screen returned and returned to the screen more than a decade later to play the lead role of writer John Anderson for director Nic Saunders in Queen of the Redwood Mountains, a film directed by the writers of Beat Generation and will be released in 2021.

Former Happy Days co-star Ron Howard, who played Chuck's brother Richie Cunningham, mourned O'Herlihy on Twitter. “A talented actor with a great free spirit,” said Howard, who also directed O'Herlihy in the 1988 film Willow. O'Herlihy's family did not reveal the cause of his death. “Gavan was bigger than life and is greatly missed by everyone who knew him, especially his lovely wife and family,” said Emptage. “China Beach” actress Dana Delany remembered O'Herlihy for her appearance on the show. “I am so sorry to hear about the death of Gavan O'Herlihy. He was my Everglades lover in one of our strangest episodes of China Beach, Juice,” he wrote on Twitter. 

Interview

 In an interview with the YouTube channel TwentyFour7tv in 2007, O'Herlihy said that the character was too dry to keep his interest, and left the show in its first season.
