Fauci: Sturgis Will Likely Cause COVID Surge — Public Heath Should Supersede Freedoms

Fauci: Sturgis is likely to cause an increase in COVID: public health should replace freedoms

Public health

The director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Dr. Anthony Fauci, said on NBC's “Meet the Press” on Sunday that the annual motorcycle rally in Sturgis, SD, is likely to lead to an increase in new cases of COVID-19. Anker Chuck Todd said, “You raised the south regionally. On the Plains, Great Plains, Sturgis, South Dakota, a gathering of approximately 700,000 people today. Last year, voter turnout was lower and there were more than 150,000 people. This led to a massive breakup in the Dakotas, where they essentially became number one and number two for the rest of the calendar year. What do you expect this rally to have to do with this part of the country?

People Care

Fauci said: “I am very concerned that we will see a further increase in relation to this uptick. For me, it's understandable that people want to do the things they want to do. You want them to have the freedom to do it, but there comes a time when you are dealing with the public health crisis in which you, your family, and everyone else could be involved, in which something replaces the need to do what you have to do. You can do it in the future, but let's get this pandemic under control before we act like nothing is happening. There's something bad going on. We have to acknowledge that.”
