Saudi Arabia has issued a new electronic passport for its citizens, using state-of-the-art technology to further improve security features.

Saudi Interior Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud bin Naif issued the passport. In this regard, the Assistant Director General of the General Directorate of Passports, Major General Khalid Al-Seikhan said that this is a turning point in the transition from a readable passport to an electronic passport.

He said that the new passport has been prepared keeping in view the latest security features and it is also in line with the required standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization.

The passport also has a chip that holds the ability to secure the holder's personal information. In addition to the passport holder's data, the chip will also store images taken by three different technologies, which will enable passport verification on all digital portals through this chip.


Maj. Gen. Khalid Al-Seikhan said that citizens can apply for electronic passport under the prevailing procedure while over time the readable passport will be canceled completely.
