Fresh Air Weekend: Dave Grohl; Will Smith?

Fresh Air Weekend: Dave Grohl; Will Smith

Dave Grohl appears on stage during recordings of the “Vax Live” donation concert in 2021 in Inglewood, California.

Fresh Air Weekend: Dave Grohl; Will Smith Fresh Air Weekend highlights some of the best interviews and reviews in recent weeks, as well as new elements of the program designed specifically for the weekends. Our weekend program focuses on interviews with writers, filmmakers, actors and musicians and often includes excerpts from live concerts in the studio. This week: Dave Grohl traces his life-affirming path from nirvana to foo fighters: After the end of nirvana, Grohl wasn't sure if he wanted to continue making music. But he says, “I realized that music was the only thing that had healed me all my life.” His memoir is The Storyteller.
Robust masculinity takes a dark turn in “The Power of the Dog”: Jane Campions Western unfolds as a well-wrapped psychological thriller in which Benedict Cumberbatch is one of the scariest characters you probably know this year. Will Smith says he created a lighthearted image to mask the pain of the past: As a child, Smith watched helplessly as his father beat his mother. The experience shaped him: “The mental anguish I had to overcome was a big part of growing up in the person I am today.”
