YouTube TV Loses Disney channels and ABC, ESPN Channels?

YouTube TV, the second largest streaming service, made its subscribers, especially college football fans, unhappy this morning. Several major channels that will air many college football games have been removed from their lineup, including the channel that is scheduled to air the Iowa/Kentucky bowling game on New Year's Day. When I turned on my YouTube TV app this morning, they greeted me with the news that ESPN and Disney channels had been removed from my list.

YouTube TV almost lost NBCUniversal's channels in another recent dispute. However, in this case, YouTube and NBC agreed to a short extension to prevent a power outage when the original contract expired and they later reached a new multi-year agreement.

live streaming service YouTube TV has removed Disney channels such as ESPN, FX, National Geographic and local ABC stations after parent company Google and The Walt Disney Co failed to reach a new agreement.

ESPN Channels

The two companies negotiated a new contract during the week and Disney had told USA TODAY that it was “optimistic” that an agreement could be reached. That crack comes as the college football season heats up and many games are scheduled to air on ABC, ESPN and ESPN 2.

Disney's Content Remains

“We have been negotiating with Disney in good faith for several months. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we were unable to reach an agreement just before the existing one expired,” the statement said.

Current Agreement

There was no extension to avoid a power outage in the ongoing YouTube TV/Disney dispute, but both companies still hope to reach a new agreement.

"We have had ongoing negotiations with Google's YouTube TV and, unfortunately, they refused to reach a fair agreement with us based on market conditions,” Disney said in a statement to news agencies. “As a result, their subscribers lost access to our unmatched portfolio of networks, including sports and live news, ABC children's, family and general entertainment, ESPN networks, Disney channels, Freeform networks, FX networks, and National Geographic channels. We are ready to reach a fair agreement with Google as soon as possible to minimize the hassle for YouTube viewers by restoring our networks. We hope that Google will support us in this effort."
